Built in 1935 at Birkenhead in Port Adelaide WEEROOPA was built by “Scrubby” Harris. He built 6 boats in total with WEEROOPA being the largest. Scrubby was a member of the Port Adelaide Sailing Club and went on to become Commodore of the club. In 1936 WEEROOPA was the fastest boat on handicap for her size in SA. (Unfortunately the trophy eludes me but I believe it to be held by a Harris family member). I purchased the boat in 1999 and am only the 5th owner which testifies that this is a boat that you hang on to. In 2003 I commenced a total refit which included
74 new ribs, New stringers, 2600 new copper nails/roves, 150 new silicon bronze screws to the garboard planks and transom, All seams raked and fully recalked top to bottom, New cabin sole / galley / bunks / bulkheads chart table etc., Fully rewired using tinned copper, Mast totally rebuilt
After that I moved to complete other aspects which I considered would help to make a beautiful cruising boat
New Push pit / New Pulpit / New Dodger, Cruising sun awning, Full boat covers (boom right down to cover over toe rails), New headsail / staysail, VHF / UHF / 27Meg / Chart plotter / 2nd GPS / sounder, Auto helm, 100 litres of diesel / 150 litres of water, Solar panel battery backup
I have cruised the boat extensively in the gulf and she is a joy to sail and as well as being set up to be a single hander she is a beautiful sea kindly boat and draws admiring looks and comments wherever she goes. With the work she has had done she will last another 50 years and despite what people say wooden boats are no harder to work on than plastic boats. WEEROOPA also comes with a dinghy which I tow all over the gulf so I can get to shore (I am not a marina person). The dinghy tows beautifully and I have never had an issue. All the hard work has been done.
WEEROOPA is ready to sail away having been re antifouled in November 2015. Time and tide wait for no man as we know and I have reluctantly had to admit that it’s time for me to find the next custodian.
Are you to be the sixth owner and custodian of WEEROOPA?
WEEROOPA is for sale asking price $29,500.00
